Netflix is working on a free tier with ads that will start next year. But it looks like this feature will have a big downside.
Some of the most recent reports say that Netflix’s plan to have ads will prevent offline viewing. When the ad-supported tier comes out, users won’t be able to download titles to watch offline.
Steve Moser, a developer, found code in the Netflix iPhone app that stops users from downloading movies and TV shows to watch offline.
“Downloads are available on all plans except for Netflix with ads,” the code said. According to the reports, users will also not be able to skip commercials.
A Netflix representative said, “We are still in the early stages of figuring out how to launch a cheaper, ad-supported option, and no decisions have been made.” At this point, everything is just a guess.
Netflix is still setting up the tier with ads, which it plans to release in early 2023. On the other hand, Netflix just announced that it will soon start testing a new “add a home” feature that will charge users in certain countries for sharing their passwords with others.
The test will ask users to pay an extra fee if they use their account somewhere other than their own home.
