Microsoft lost a substantial amount of goodwill by requiring uninterested users to use the Microsoft Edge browser, but perhaps those days are coming to an end. A user Leopeva64 shared a GIF in which he is using a future version of Google’s Chrome web browser alongside the 2H22 Windows 10 upgrade for a possible glimpse into the future.

As of March of this year, choosing your default browser in Windows 11 required only a few clicks in a settings panel, but you can see that Windows 10 is even more streamlined. And with the Chrome and Windows 10 22H2 updates, it appears you may simply click the pop-up in the browser (in this example, Chrome Dev version 106.0.5231.2) to immediately set it. This would be an excellent addition to Windows 11.

Add to that the fact that rival browsers like Firefox and Opera already support the same kind of one-click, in-browser default app switching, and we may be entering a new golden age where browsers can actually compete on their merits as opposed to begging for your business or forcing you to use them. Simply click to switch browsers as many as you like until you find the one you prefer.
