California Governor Gavin Newsom and Tesla CEO Elon Musk visited the company’s new engineering headquarters on Wednesday.
The meeting at Tesla’s engineering office in Palo Alto, California, according to sources close to the governor, concentrated on the company’s efforts to expand and create jobs in the state.
Engineers skilled in artificial intelligence and research and development will be the main focus of the expansion. Tesla has taken over the lease for the office space that Hewlett-Packard previously occupied. The plans will aid in the acceleration of efforts to develop autonomous driving and robot technology.
“I think it’s a poetic transition from the founders of Silicon Valley to Tesla, and we’re very excited to make this our global engineering headquarters,” Musk told media. “We’re also a California-Texas company.”
Several previous attempts to arrange a meeting between the state’s most well-known politician and the most outspoken billionaire failed to materialise.
Musk described the new facility as “effectively a Tesla headquarters” and a “sort of dual-headquartered company.” Tesla’s main office is in Austin, Texas.
