Instagram co-founders launch ‘Artifact’ news app
Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, co-founders of Instagram, have announced “Artifact,” a text-based version of TikTok that will utilize machine learning to determine users’ interests.
According to the report, Artifact is a customized news feed application whose name indicates the combination of articles, facts, and artificial intelligence (AI).
The program, which is accessible for both Android and iOS devices, opened its waiting list to the public on Tuesday.
The app opens to a feed of popular stories curated from a variety of sites, ranging from top news outlets to small-scale blogs about niche themes.
After users touch on articles that interest them, the app will display similar posts and stories in the future, similar to how watching videos on TikTok’s For You page tweaks the app’s algorithm over time.
The app’s beta users are currently evaluating two other features that Systrom thinks will become the app’s mainstays.
One of them is a feed that displays posts published by users you’ve chosen to follow, as well as their comments.
The second feature is a direct message inbox, which will allow users to discreetly discuss the content they read with friends.
“Throughout the years, what I saw was that every time we used machine learning to improve the consumer experience, things got really good really quickly,” Systrom said in a statement.
He also stated that Artifact will delete specific posts that spread misinformation.
According to the article, the application’s machine-learning algorithms will be primarily focused on analyzing how much time users spend reading about various topics.
