OpenAI’s widely used ChatGPT service experienced a major outage on Tuesday, affecting users across multiple countries. The service became unavailable or returned errors starting at approximately 9:50 a.m. ET, with reports coming in from the United States, Asia, and Europe.
Users encountered a notice stating “Failed to get service status” at the top of the page when attempting to access ChatGPT. Prompted queries resulted in an error message: “Something went wrong. If this issue persists, please contact us through our help center at help.openai.com.” Some users also reported seeing an alternative error message stating, “Sorry, you have been blocked. You are unable to access auth0.openai.com.”
The cause of the outage remains unknown, and there is currently no estimated timeline for resolution. OpenAI acknowledged the issue on its status page, stating, “We are currently investigating this issue.”
