Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, announced today its plans to incorporate invisible watermarking into its text-to-image generation product, Imagine, featuring the Meta AI chatbot. The groundbreaking technology is expected to be implemented in the coming weeks.

The social media giant unveiled a range of AI-infused products for consumers in late September, including chatbots capable of generating photo-realistic images and smart glasses equipped to answer user queries. In a blog post, Meta revealed its commitment to extending invisible watermarking to multiple AI-generated image products in the future. This innovative watermarking is designed to be resilient against common image manipulations such as cropping and screen captures.

Meta AI, developed using a custom model based on the powerful Llama 2 large language model released for public commercial use in July, marks Meta’s foray into leveraging the capabilities of large language models to enhance user experiences. The success of ChatGPT, backed by Microsoft, has influenced other companies to harness the power of similar language models, driving innovation, attracting new investors, and retaining and engaging customers.

Meta is currently testing over 20 new applications of generative AI to enhance user experiences across its various social media platforms, including Instagram and WhatsApp. The company aims to expand access to Imagine beyond chat functionalities, making it available in the United States. Additionally, Meta is working on improving search capabilities across its diverse product offerings.

This strategic move by Meta Platforms underscores the growing importance of transparent and innovative AI solutions in the tech industry. As companies continue to integrate advanced technologies into their products, the focus on enhancing user trust and experience becomes paramount. Invisible watermarking represents a key step forward in ensuring the authenticity and integrity of AI-generated content, setting a new standard for transparency in the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.
