European Union’s antitrust regulators are poised to block Amazon’s proposed $1.4 billion acquisition of robot vacuum maker iRobot, according to three individuals familiar with the matter. The move comes as regulatory bodies intensify scrutiny of major deals involving tech giants.

Despite a warning from the European Commission about potential competition restrictions in the robot vacuum cleaner market, Amazon has chosen not to provide remedies to address these concerns. The Commission is set to make a decision on the deal by February 14, and both Amazon and the regulatory body declined to offer comments on the matter.

The primary worry for regulators is that Amazon could impede iRobot’s competitors on its online marketplace, particularly in key European markets such as France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. While the enforcement of the recently introduced Digital Markets Act could address these concerns, the Commission appears skeptical due to the extended enforcement process and the absence of legal challenges to the new legislation. Consequently, the decision to block the deal is seen as a preemptive measure.

Should the EU antitrust regulators veto the acquisition, it would establish a higher threshold for future Amazon acquisitions involving online rivals. Enforcers are likely to demand substantial remedies as a condition for approving such deals, signaling increased scrutiny and regulatory hurdles for major tech transactions within the European market.
