Dr. Roman V Yampolskiy, a prominent Russian computer scientist from the University of Louisville, has claimed that there is no evidence to support the notion that artificial intelligence (AI) can be effectively controlled and made safe.

Dr. Yampolskiy argues that even partial controls would be insufficient to safeguard society from the potential adverse effects of AI, which could reshape the world in ways that may be detrimental.

After conducting a comprehensive review of existing scientific literature, Dr. Yampolskiy, set to publish his findings in an upcoming book, asserts that humanity is on the brink of an almost inevitable event with the potential to cause an existential catastrophe. He emphasizes the gravity of the situation, stating, “No wonder many consider this to be the most important problem humanity has ever faced. The outcome could be prosperity or extinction, and the fate of the universe hangs in the balance.”

Dr. Yampolskiy advocates for a significant AI safety effort, emphasizing the need to make AI as safe as possible. However, he remains skeptical about the feasibility of fully protecting the world from the dangers posed by AI. As AI capabilities increase, there is a growing risk of safety failures, making it challenging to defend against every potential danger.

One potential solution proposed by Dr. Yampolskiy is to treat AI more as an advisor, with humans ultimately making the decisions. However, he acknowledges the paradox of value-aligned AI, noting that an AI system may respond with a “no” even when explicitly ordered by a person if it believes the action contradicts the person’s actual desires. This raises complex ethical questions about whether humanity can be both protected and respected simultaneously.

In light of these concerns, Dr. Yampolskiy urges the importance of acknowledging the limitations of AI control and emphasizes the need for ongoing research and efforts to enhance AI safety. The debate surrounding the management and safety of AI continues to be a critical issue with far-reaching implications for the future of humanity.
