Few people have been alone with an adult bear and lived to tell the rest of the world about it. And this is why a woman from Washington state has become an internet hero for punching a black bear square in the nose to prevent a deadly attack.

According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the unnamed woman from Leavenworth was attacked from behind by an adult female black bear when she let her dog out at 7 a.m. on October 22.

According to the report, the bear knocked the woman to the ground but couldn’t kill her because she fought back hard.

Rich Beausoleil, a wildlife biologist, says that she was caught off guard, but she fought back right away by punching the wild animal in the nose.

“She didn’t see it coming so she could not make herself big, clap her hands, you know, yell at the bear, wave her arms. Those are the things we usually tell people to do. If the bear knocks you down, then yes, your solution is to fight,” said.

“It was just instinct for her. She just turned around and popped it right in the nose,” Beausoleil told KING-TV.

The punch to the nose scared and shook the bear, and it ran away quickly.

The woman was taken to the hospital and given care for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Wildlife officials found the animal not far from where the attack took place.

Reports say that it was killed because it had gotten too big and dangerous from eating trash.

“Public safety is our priority. Our officers and staff were quick to mobilize to locate the animal and secure the scene. We are extremely thankful that the victim is receiving medical care from this unfortunate encounter,” said Fish and Wildlife, Captain Mike Jewell.
