Do you despise rats? Are you a “somewhat bloodthirsty” New Yorker with “a overall aura of badassery”? Then you might be the right person to be the city’s new rat czar.

This Monday, Mayor Eric Adams’ office placed a job posting looking for someone to oversee the city’s long-running campaign against rats. The formal title is “director of rodent mitigation,” but the rat czar was quickly coined. The salary range is between $120,000 and $170,000.

The ad states, “The ideal candidate is highly motivated and somewhat bloodthirsty, determined to look at all solutions from various angles, including improving operational efficiency, data collection, technology innovation, trash management, and wholesale slaughter.”

For years, New York City officials have attempted to manage the mouse population, with varying degrees of success. Rat sightings in parks, sidewalks, and other public areas have recently surged.

City rats have survived a multimillion-dollar initiative launched by former Mayor Bill de Blasio to improve trash collection and home inspections in specified neighbourhoods. The city also began using dry ice to suffocate rats in their hiding places.

When he was Brooklyn borough president, Adams exhibited a trap that used a bucket filled with a deadly soup to drown rats enticed by the aroma of food.

The Adams administration is currently recruiting for a top rat bureaucrat to serve as the public face of the city’s rat eradication and education operations.

“Cunning, voracious, and prolific, New York City’s rats are legendary for their survival skills, but they don’t run this city – we do,” the posting said.

Applicants must be able to “to lead from the front, using hands-on techniques to exterminate rodents with authority and efficiency.”
