Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has granted a substantial AED700 million contract for the Al Khail Road Improvement Project, following directives from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and supervised by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
This initiative seeks to enhance the road network infrastructure to support Dubai’s development and urban requirements, ensuring smooth traffic circulation. It encompasses the erection of bridges spanning 3,300 meters and road enhancement activities covering 6,820 meters at seven sites along Al Khail Road. These efforts will expand existing intersections and bridges, boosting capacity by around 19,600 vehicles per hour. The enhancements aim to optimize traffic flow, alleviate congestion at flyovers, and reduce travel durations by up to 30%.
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, describes the Al Khail Road Improvement Project as a strategic endeavor focused on bolstering the capacity of vital traffic arteries in Dubai. It aims to support key roads like Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road.
Al Khail Road, extending from Business Bay crossing to its intersection with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, holds significant importance in Dubai’s transportation system, boasting six lanes in each direction. This project aligns with Dubai’s continual endeavors to match urban growth and provide effective transportation infrastructure to fulfill the requirements of residents and businesses.
The initial phase of the project targets the Zabeel area along Al Khail Road, specifically from Oud Metha Street to Financial Centre Street intersections. The proposal involves building a 700-meter-long, three-lane bridge to accommodate around 4,800 vehicles per hour. This bridge will provide a direct route for traffic from Zabeel Palace Street and Oud Metha Road to Al Khail Road, heading towards Abu Dhabi. Furthermore, enhancements will be made to surface roads spanning 850 meters to connect traffic from Al Khail Road to Financial Centre Street leading to Sheikh Zayed Road.
At the Meydan location along Al Khail Road, from Al Meydan Road to Ras Al Khor Road intersections, a 610-meter-long two-lane bridge will be built to cater to approximately 3,200 vehicles per hour. This bridge will connect traffic from Al Meydan Road to Al Khail Road, heading towards Deira. Additionally, surface road enhancements spanning 1,550 meters will be carried out to link traffic from Al Khail Road to Ras Al Khor Road.
The third site, situated in Al Quoz 1 on Al Khail Road between the intersections of Al Meydan Road and Al Waha Street, will include a 650-meter-long, two-lane bridge capable of accommodating 3,200 vehicles per hour. This bridge will facilitate traffic from Al Meydan Road to Al Khail Road, directing towards Abu Dhabi.
Likewise, at the fourth site in Ghadeer Al Tair, a two-lane bridge spanning 640 meters will connect Latifa Bint Hamdan Street traffic to Al Khail Road, heading towards Deira. Additionally, both sites will undergo surface road enhancements to improve traffic connectivity.
At the fifth location in Jumeirah Village Circle, a two-lane bridge spanning 700 meters will be built to accommodate 3,200 vehicles per hour. This bridge will link traffic from Al Khail Road to Hessa Street. Furthermore, surface road improvements spanning 900 meters will enhance traffic connectivity from Jumeirah Village Circle to Al Khail Road, directing towards Deira.
The sixth site entails widening the surface of Al Khail Road in Al Jaddaf by adding a new lane to enhance traffic flow towards Deira, thereby increasing capacity by approximately 2,000 vehicles per hour.
The seventh site involves widening the surface of Al Khail Road at the entrance to Business Bay by adding an extra lane. This enhancement is intended to facilitate smoother traffic flow from Al Khail Road to the Business Bay area, with the goal of improving traffic safety and flow in both directions.
