Govinda girls build a Dahi Handi Pyramid
Many rituals are done on the day of Janmashtami, with “Dahi-Handi” being one of the most well-known. “Dahi-Handi,” also called “Gopalakala,” is a ritual in which followers of Lord Krishna build a human tower and act out “Maakhan Chori,” which means “stealing butter” and is one of the Lord’s many mischievous acts from his childhood stories. It takes place on the day after Janamashtami.
Most Dahi Handi pyramids are made by men with a lightweight boy on top, but this video shows that girls can also be Govindas and make an impressive pyramid in Handi competitions. On the second day of Janmashtami, a group of girls in Mumbai’s Dadar Nakshatra Lane competed in a event.
The girls made a tall three-level pyramid with a girl climbing to the top to break the Dahi Handi. They were dressed as Govindas and wore yellow T-shirts. A huge crowd gathered to watch the girls break the Handi, which was hung very high.

Hindus celebrate Janamashtami every year to remember when Lord Krishna was born. Lord Krishna is the God of playfulness and innocence, so this festival is a great way to honour him. Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was born on the eighth day of the month of Bhadra, according to the Hindu calendar. According to the Western calendar, the day usually falls in August or September. On Janamashtami, people pray to Lord Krishna, put up beautifully decorated swings, watch dance and music performances, and compete in the “Dahi-Handi” event.
