Sea lion hops on boat to escape killer whales
A sea lion escaping killer whales nearly overturned a tiny boat carrying a pair of boaters off the coast of British Columbia.
While fishing at Pedder Bay, close to Victoria, Ernest and Viesia Godek said that they shut their motor when they noticed a group of killer whales close to their boat.
The two claimed that a sea lion suddenly appeared at the side of their boat after hearing thumping on the boat’s bottom.
The sea lion then appeared to attempt to flee the killer whales by jumping onto the side of the boat.
According to Ernest Godek, the Times Colonist, “It tipped the boat over to the point where we had to hang on to the gunnels, the water started pouring into the boat … I was just hoping that we wouldn’t totally tip over.”
The sea lion dove back into the water as the boat righted itself. The couple claimed that it followed them as they made their way back to land.
Visitors on a neighbouring whale-watching boat took pictures and videos of the encounter.
The vessel’s captain, Mark Malleson, calculated that the California Eumetopias weighed 700–800 pounds.
Malleson told the media, “If that animal had landed in the boat, somebody could have gotten seriously hurt, just from the sheer size or from the teeth.”
