Northern Lights: The sky, clouds, stars, and moon are just a few of the objects that catch people’s attention. People always value a fine view, whether it is of the brilliant night sky or the bright, gorgeous daylight. Similar to how folks in the UK were taken aback by a rare appearance above. Many were in wonder as a rare display of the Northern Lights appeared above them in a green, pink, and golden sky.

The UK Met Office posted a few pictures of the same on their Twitter account.

According to a Met Office spokeswoman and the “strip of clear skies,” the unusual observations were caused by the “intensity” of a geomagnetic storm.

On Monday, more of these sightings are anticipated.

According to a tweet from the Met Office, an evening coronal mass ejection and a high-speed stream from a coronal hole caused aurora sightings across the UK.

Why Do Northern Lights Occur?

The aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, are stunning dancing waves of light that have mesmerized humanity for millennia. Despite its beauty, this amazing light show is actually rather a violent spectacle.

The lights we see in the night sky are actually brought on by activity on the Sun’s surface, according to the Royal Society of Greenwich. Huge clouds of electrically charged particles are released by solar storms on the surface of our star. Some of these particles may eventually collide with the Earth after travelling millions of miles. The majority of these particles are diverted, but some are caught in the magnetic field of the Earth and accelerate towards the north and south poles and into the atmosphere. The magnetic poles are where aurora activity is concentrated because of this.

Hence, what we see is the result of solar particle collisions with atoms and molecules in our atmosphere. The Earth’s magnetic field’s lines of force are what produce the aurora’s distinctive wavy patterns and ‘curtains’ of light.

Heat causes certain gases to emit a variety of colours. The aurora is going through the same procedure. Nitrogen and oxygen, the two main gases in the Earth’s atmosphere, each emit a unique colour during an aurora show. It went on to say that oxygen causes the aurora’s signature green colour, whilst nitrogen is responsible for the aurora’s tints of purple, blue, or pink.
