In a heartbreaking turn of events, Indian nurse Nimisha Priya from Kerala is facing the death penalty in Yemen for the July 2017 murder of Yemeni native Talal Abdo Mahdi. In an attempt to regain her passport from his possession, Nimisha allegedly injected him with sedatives. After hearing Nimisha’s mother’s request to travel to Yemen, the Delhi High Court directed the Centre to make a decision within a week.

Nimisha’s mother attempts to bargain with the victim’s family by giving “blood money,” a sort of restitution. The Centre informed the Delhi High Court on November 13 that the Supreme Court of Yemen had dismissed Nimisha’s appeal. Despite the fact that Indian people are now prohibited from travelling to Yemen, a recent notification indicated a possible waiver for particular reasons and periods.

Nimisha Priya has lived in Yemen’s Sana since 2011. According to sources, Nimisha and her colleague Hanan disfigured Mahadi’s body before disposing of it in a water tank after mistakenly killing Talal. While Nimisha faces the death penalty, Hanan, a Yemeni national, was sentenced to life in prison.

As Nimisha’s mother races against the clock to save her daughter, the incident highlights the complexities of legal concerns and the critical necessity for diplomatic assistance to keep Nimisha from being executed.
