Renowned Filmmaker Ross McDonnell Missing in NYC
Ross McDonnell, an Irish filmmaker and Emmy-winning cinematographer, has been reported missing in New York since November 4. The 44-year-old was last spotted leaving his Brooklyn home, and a missing persons poster claims he may have been seen at Fort Tilden Beach. Gene Gallerano, a friend of McDonnell’s, speculates that Ross may have ventured into the ocean before missing. On November 7, McDonnell’s bike was located secured at the beach after the alarm was raised on Sunday, November 5.
McDonnell, who was born in Dublin, has worked in directing, cinematography, and producing. His first feature picture, “Colony,” won the IDFA First Feature Award at the Toronto International Picture Festival. He won an Emmy in 2021 for his cinematography on the Showtime series “The Trade.” McDonnell’s work displays a preoccupation with nonfiction and the photographic process’s interplay between transience and permanence.
Among the filmmaker’s numerous credits are an Emmy-nominated documentary, “Elián,” and a Prix Pictet shortlisting in 2019. “Joyrider,” his debut book, was released in October 2021. Friends and coworkers are struggling with the odd circumstances surrounding McDonnell’s disappearance, making this a difficult week for those who knew him. The search for Ross McDonnell continues, with the film and photography communities concerned for the well-being of the outstanding artist.
