Frankie Avalon and his wife Kathryn Diebel got married in 1963 when he was a rising singer with hits like “Venus” and “Why.” Diebel was a finalist in the Miss Rheingold Contest around the same time. After their wedding, Avalon became famous for his roles in Beach Party movies with Annette Funicello and later gained recognition for playing Teen Angel in the musical Grease.

While Avalon was busy with his career, he and Diebel also focused on growing their family. They had eight children over ten years – four boys and four girls. Today, they’re happy grandparents to eight grandchildren.

“Raising eight children, my wife did a sensational job,” Avalon talked about Diebel on The Rosie O’Donnell Show in 1997, mentioning that Diebel had a lot to handle at home, especially when Avalon was away working on a set or in the studio.

“We didn’t have any help in the house or anything like that, so she did all the bathing and stuff by herself,” he added.

Avalon and Diebel lead a peaceful life now that their kids have grown up and moved out. On Sundays, they make a big Italian meal for their family to stay connected to their Italian heritage.

Avalon and Diebel got married in a small wedding on January 19, 1963. Avalon wore a simple white dress with a flared shape and added a lace-sleeved overlay. She completed her look with a pillbox hat, a tulle veil, and white gloves. Avalon’s husband, Diebel, wore a black tuxedo with a silver tie, and in pictures, he and his groomsmen had ivory boutonnieres.

Before their 53rd wedding anniversary in 2016, Avalon shared the key to his and Diebel’s “great” marriage.

“You know, there’s this one word that really sums it up. It’s called love, and if you have that basic love then things that happen in a marriage — good, bad or indifferent — [it’s fine] as long as you have that love,” The musician shared with Fox News, saying that showing respect is important in a relationship as well.

“We’ve got a wonderful relationship,” Avalon said.

“We are a very close family. I have eight children and 10 grandchildren, and they all live within 10 miles,” he said. “Most people who have children have one who’s in Idaho, one who’s in New York. We are very fortunate.”

Avalon loves nothing more than preparing homemade pasta and meatballs for his family. He shared in an interview with AZCentral that his kids always have a standing dinner invitation at his place on Sunday nights, and he and Diebel wouldn’t want it any other way.

“I want to keep that tradition going when I am out of this world,” Avalon told VC Star of their family-style Italian dinners. On the topic of his cookbook, Frankie Avalon’s Italian Family Cookbook: From Mom’s Kitchen to Mine and Yours, he added: “Now my kids and grandkids have got this piece of material they can refer to.”

Sunday dinners started as a way for Avalon’s family to gather regularly, but as he started changing and improving old family recipes, it led to Avalon creating his own cookbook.

Just like her husband, Diebel enjoys musicals. In November 2005, they walked the red carpet together for the opening night of Jersey Boys at the August Wilson Theater in New York City. They did the same thing when the musical came to Los Angeles in 2007.

Apart from theater performances, Diebel has gone with Avalon to several fancy events, like the 22nd Annual Race to Erase MS in 2007.

In June 1988, Diebel and Avalon went to a White House event that celebrated fixing up Ford’s Theater. They got to meet President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan.

Pictures show them shaking hands with the Reagans in a fancy ballroom. For the special event, Diebel wore a nice lace dress with a high neckline and low heels.
