Joshua Dean, aged 45, was a whistleblower at Spirit AeroSystems, a supplier for Boeing. Based in Wichita, Kansas, he worked as a quality auditor, ensuring the safety of Boeing 737s by overseeing the assembly of key components like the fuselage.
In October 2022, Dean exposed critical manufacturing flaws, including improperly drilled bulkhead holes, which were identified nearly a year before Boeing acknowledged them officially. Despite reporting his findings to supervisors, he faced resistance from Spirit, who chose to conceal the defect.
In April 2023, Dean was fired from Spirit, allegedly for his persistent efforts to expose manufacturing defects. He contended that his dismissal was retaliatory, as he had repeatedly raised concerns about manufacturing errors.
Tragically, Joshua Dean passed away due to a rapidly spreading infection in April 2024. Despite his reputation for good health, he fell critically ill and spent two weeks in critical condition before succumbing to the illness.
Dean was born in 1978 in the United States, held a degree in mechanical engineering, he had around 20 years of experience. He joined Spirit in 2019, serving as a quality auditor, focusing on evaluating manufacturing plans and systems to minimize errors. Despite facing a layoff in 2020 due to COVID-19, he returned in 2021 to continue his role at Spirit’s Wichita plant.
