A new name for Monkeypox? The name of the monkeypox virus, its clades, and the disease it produces are all being changed; according to a statement made last week by WHO.
Scientists have advocated for the name of monkeypox to be changed; in order to eliminate the myth that Africa is a hotbed of disease.

The clades of the monkeypox virus, which are several branches of the virus’ family tree; have generated a lot of debate because they are named after African nations.

A group of 29 scientists submitted a statement; stating that there is a “urgent need for a non-discriminatory and non-stigmatizing nomenclature”; for the virus just days before; the WHO announced it will change monkeypox’s name.
