An elderly was killed in a head-on collision with a white van driver who was ‘showing off’ by switching lanes to pass other cars.

On May 4 last year, Aron Hicks, 28, was overtaking ‘for no reason’ when he collided with Brian Hunt, 78, who died shortly after the collision on the A417 near Cholsey, Oxfordshire.

Hicks was on his way to work, but not in a hurry, according to prosecutor Andrew Jordan. He passed one car before attempting to pass another.

As he approached the summit of the hill, Hicks pulled to the opposite side of the road, possibly exceeding the 50mph speed limit. He failed to notice Mr. Hunt’s Honda Civic and collided with it.

Even though he was alone in his van, Hicks informed his probation officer that he was ‘showing off.’

Susan Hunt, Brian’s 54-year-old widow, said: ‘Words cannot explain the agony and anguish that my family, our friends, and I have experienced since my husband Brian’s death.’

‘He didn’t deserve to die the way he did. My husband’s life was taken by Aron Hicks. He’ll never realize how much of an impact he’s had on our family. It’s unthinkable and unforgivable.’

Brian’s son Stuart said in a statement that it seemed like the family’s “heart had physically been ripped out.”

Hicks, of Camberley, was sentenced to three years and four months in prison after pleading guilty to causing death through hazardous driving.

He was given a three-year and eight-month driving suspension, as well as an extended retest.

‘Mr. Hunt had catastrophic injuries which, despite the efforts of the doctors, he could not be rescued and he died shortly thereafter,’ Judge Ian Pringle QC told the driver while imprisoning him.

‘His death is your responsibility.’
