Under a Home Office trial, certain people who arrive in the UK on small boats or on the backs of lorries will be electronically tagged.

The 12-month trial, which began on Wednesday, will assess whether electronic monitoring is an effective way to provide immigration bail to asylum seekers, according to the government.

It’s part of the government’s crackdown on people who enter the nation via “unnecessary and risky means.”

The Home Office intends to put an end to the unethical business model of people smugglers who put their passengers in risky situations.

However, advocates argue that criminalizing refugees based on their means of entry is ineffective and violates the idea of asylum.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) granted an injunction on Tuesday, halting a deportation trip to Rwanda.

Britain has reached an agreement with the East African country, giving £120 million in economic development in exchange for taking in ‘illegal’ asylum seekers.

The United Kingdom has also pledged to remove the most ‘vulnerable refugee populations’ from Rwanda if they are unable to be appropriately housed there.

The ECHR’s ‘totally shameful’ involvement, according to Home Secretary Priti Patel, was politically driven.

Meanwhile, Justice Secretary Dominic Raab has hinted that new legislation might allow the government to simply ignore temporary measures issued by the Strasbourg court.

According to the BBC, the first people to be tagged under the bail program were likely individuals who had evaded being deported to Rwanda.

The trial, according to the Home Office, will see if tagging aids regular communication with people granted release and advances their claims more successfully.

Those who have been tagged will be required to report to authorities on a regular basis, may be subject to a curfew or be barred from particular areas, and failing to comply could result in their being detained or prosecuted.

It comes after new numbers indicated that the number of migrants crossing the Channel to join the United Kingdom this year has surpassed 11,000 for the first time.

According to Ministry of Defense figures, Border Force or the RNLI have brought 11,092 people to shore after being rescued from small boats in the English Channel, the world’s busiest maritime waterway.

On four small boats, 146 persons were transported to the United Kingdom.

After reaching a high of 444 on Tuesday, the daily number has been progressively declining throughout the week. Since 562, this was the highest number.

On Thursday, at least 48 people were brought ashore in Dover, including women, children, and adult men.

This week’s warm weather and calm seas may have prompted an uptick in attempted crossings.

With 13 days left in June, the number of persons crossing the Channel is nearly double that of last year at this time. By the end of June 2021, a total of 5,911 persons had crossed the border that year.

According to analysis, 341 boats have been used to cross the English Channel so far this year, with an average of 32 passengers on board each.
