An Oregon judge has sentenced novelist Nancy Cramton Broffey to life in prison for shooting her deceased husband in an essay entitled “How to Murder Your Husband.”

Cramton Broffey, 71, was convicted last month of first-degree murder.

A jury found that in 2018, she shot and killed her 26-year-old husband for $ 1.5 million in life insurance. Prior to the murder, Crampton Boffy was a self-proclaimed author of love and suspense works, which included novels such as Wrong Husband and Wrong Boyfriend.

Her late Daniel Broffy was a chef and professor emeritus at the Oregon Culinary Institute. He was found after being shot by two bullets in a canteen at a research laboratory in June 2018. His widow was convicted last month of murder.

This case drew a lot of attention to Crampton Boffy’s essay “How to Kill Your Husband”, written a few years before the murder. “We are aware of the crimes,” he said in a statement that has now been deleted.

Before he wrote, “It’s easier to want people to die than to really kill them,” he said. “I do not want to spend time in prison if the murder will set me free,” he added.

A judge refused to accept a written essay in a writing workshop a few years ago as evidence in court. But the prosecution did not need text.

They successfully demonstrated that Crampton Boffy had the motive and means to kill his partner, showing that the couple was going through difficult financial times and could receive substantial insurance payments after his death. Crampton saw Brofi walking to and from the lab with CCTV cameras installed in court at the time of the murder. Police did not find a weapon of mass destruction, but it turned out to be a rifle of the same brand.

From the morning of his death, the writer Brophy took a stand to defend himself, claiming that he had a “memory hole”. However, there is no denying that the machine went through the laboratory.

After less than two days of deliberation, a 12-member jury found him guilty of first-degree murder. On Monday, his life sentence includes 25 years of probation. His lawyers said they would appeal. Prior to the verdict, friends and relatives of the deceased issued a statement.

Brophy’s former son-in-law, Nathaniel Stillwater, said: “You decided to lie, cheat, kidnap, cheat and kill the person you were the biggest fan of.” “You were the wrong woman borrowed from the catalog.”
