Yellowstone National Park is closed for the first time in 34 years due to extremely hazardous conditions such as severe rain, flooding, and rockslides, according to park officials.

Visitors will be unable to enter the park, which encompasses portions of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, until at least Wednesday as park authorities examine damage to roads, bridges, and other facilities. Those who make accommodation or camping reservations within the park are affected by the shutdown.

There have been no documented injuries or deaths as a result of the hazardous conditions.

‘We have made the decision to limit Yellowstone to all inbound visitation due to historic flooding events in the park and further precipitation in the forecast,’ park superintendent Cam Sholly said in a statement.

The shutdown occurs at the opening of the summer visitor season, just as Yellowstone prepares to mark its 150th anniversary. It’s also the first time since a series of deadly wildfires in 1988 that the park has been closed during the summer.

Sholly said the first priority was to evacuate the park’s northern area, which has seen the most road and bridge failures as well as mudslides.

The southern loop was also evacuated on Monday, as officials fear that further rain may fall and cause the area to flood.

Several portions of the park are without power, and preliminary reports indicate that some roads have been washed away or have become encrusted with boulders and mud.

‘We won’t know when the park will reopen until the floodwaters recede and we can survey the damage throughout the area.’ The northern loop will most certainly be closed for an extended period of time,’ Sholly predicted.

Those wanting to visit Yellowstone in the next weeks should pay particular attention to road conditions, as many roads may be closed for an extended length of time, according to the National Park Service
