At least 46 people were found dead in a semitruck in San Antonio on Monday, the mayor said.
Adriana Rocha Garcia claimed the victims were migrants during a police briefing. US authorities have launched a “unprecedented” campaign to disrupt human smuggling networks.
San Antonio police informed DHS to “an alleged human smuggling occurrence,” an ICE official said Monday.
Chief Bill McManus said three people are in jail, but their relation to the issue is unclear.
A neighbouring worker heard a plea for help just before 6 p.m., McManus said. McManus said the worker found a partially opened trailer with dead bodies inside.
Fire Chief Charles Hood says 12 adults and 4 children were hospitalised. Methodist Healthcare stated three patients at Methodist Hospital Metropolitan were stable.
Hood said those found alive had heat stroke and exhaustion and were conscious when treated. He saw no water or operational air conditioning in the refrigerated semitrailer.
Monday’s highs in San Antonio varied from the high 90s to the low 100s.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas tweeted, “I’m devastated by today’s tragic loss of life and praying for those still fighting.” Far too many families, women, and children have died on this voyage.
Hood is debriefing the 60 firemen at the scene.
“We shouldn’t find bodies in a vehicle. Nobody comes to work thinking that “he said.
Mayor Ron Nirenberg: “It’s tragic.” “46 people who had families and certainly wanted a better life are no longer with us. 16 hospitalised patients are fighting for their life.”
Mexico’s consul general in San Antonio indicated assistance would be supplied. According to Mexico’s foreign minister, two of the 16 survivors are Guatemalan.
Mayorkas told CNN earlier this month that US officials are striving to better manage migrants at the US-Mexico border. Their operation relies on earlier efforts to target traffickers migrants rely on to reach the border. Homeland Security announced a crackdown on illicit smuggling companies last spring.
Texas has had comparable illicit transport deaths in the last 20 years. In 2017, 10 people died and many were injured in a tractor-trailer at a San Antonio Walmart. The truck driver got life in jail without parole.
18 victims ages 7 to 91 were found dead in a semitruck in 2003 when temperatures topped 100 degrees, officials said. The driver was initially condemned to life in jail, but in 2011 was resentenced to nearly 34 years.
