A representative for Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia, confirmed that lightning struck; during a military training exercise on Wednesday, killing one soldier and injuring nine others.
Around 11:10 a.m., a lightening strike struck the ten troops as they were engaged in a field training exercise; according to public affairs officer Anne Bowman. She stated that it is unknown how severely the nine troops were hurt.
Once the soldier’s family has been informed, their identity will be made public.
A storm was passing through the region at the time of the incident; travelling around 45 miles per hour from northwest to southeast. It was around 80 degrees outside.
The National Weather Service reported that lightning was to blame for 11 weather-related fatalities in 2021.
Other troops have perished while participating in training exercises in the US this year; including US Army Pfc. Joseph A. Marquez, 20, who passed away in a car accident in Washington state; and Staff Sgt. Seth Michael Plant, who was killed by a bear in Alaska.
An incident involving two helicopters at an airstrip at Georgia’s Fort Benning; resulted in the death of another soldier in March.
