Chicago attorney Jim Murphy slams Kim Foxx in resignation letter

Murphy listed several reasons for his retirement, including the “Safe-T Act,” which compels prosecutors to establish a higher standard of proof to hold accused criminals until trial.

While Murphy favours the repeal of cash bail, he claims Foxx’s administration hurried the measure and ignored his objections.

Murphy also stated that Foxx’s office had “dangerously” low staffing levels in all sections and bureaus, to the point that one or two-person courtrooms are becoming normal.

“If this administration was truly concerned with effectively fighting violent crime, then they would fully staff those courtrooms and units,” he wrote.

“Meanwhile the rest of us are overworked, overstressed, and under-resourced. But at least we were allowed to wear jeans in July.”

Murphy claimed Foxx became furious several months ago when he was summoned to a conference about bail proceedings in which he was engaged.

The first was a “massive shootout,” while the second involved a woman who was gunned down while walking to a store after being caught in the crossfire.

Murphy stated that Foxx was irritated by a newspaper headline indicating that the suspect would not face a murder charge under the Safe-T Act. He stated that Foxx appeared to be angrier with the headline than with the death of a woman.

“That is what is wrong with this administration. I’ve seen day after day,” he said. “How many mass shootings do there have to be before something is done.”

“This administration is more concerned with political narratives and agendas than with victims and prosecuting violent crime,” he added. “That is why I can’t stay any longer.”
