Gregory Stamps, 31, has been accused in the Saturday murder of a 42-year-old man, courtesy of Chicago’s top prosecutor, Kimberly Foxx.

According to the Chicago Police Department and local sources, Stamps is suspected of fatally striking David Castile’s skull with a hammer “several times” at his house in the 7100 block of S. Lowe Ave.

According to court papers, he was arrested and charged with first-degree murder on Sunday morning. However, the charges were accepted only when CPD Detective-Commander Charles Brown chose to overturn Foxx’s decision not to immediately approve murder charges, as originally reported by CWBChicago.

According to the site, the state’s attorney’s office has 48 hours to submit charges until a suspect is freed, and when Foxx’s felony review section did not file charges by the 44th hour, Brown reportedly overruled that decision and approved the murder charge on his own. Foxx’s office stated that it is “unable to comment on ongoing litigation.”

According to CWBChicago, the suspect initially claimed that the victim attempted to “rape” him.

According to a source, Foxx’s felony review section “was going with possible self-defense, but they wanted the hammer processed to discover [Stamps’] prints or DNA even though he admitted to killing the victim with a hammer.” “They’re just seeking any excuse to dismiss the charges.”

According to CWBChicago, Murphy told Judge Kelly McCarthy on Tuesday, “the medical examiner claimed there were 20 to 30 cranial deformities.” “That’s 20 to 30 shots to the skull that this defendant delivered with that hammer over and over again.” That isn’t self-defense at all. That is considered first-degree murder. And I’d want to bring out that this defendant has no injuries. There are none… This is not a self-defense tactic.”
Murphy went on: “He doesn’t call the cops.” Do not dial 911. He attempts to rid himself of the body. He says, ‘I tumbled down the stairs,’ not ‘he tried to rape me.’ Stamp’s counsel argued that the suspect was acting in self-defense.

The stamps are being kept without a bond. He was previously arrested for violence and assault on March 1, 2022, and was freed the same day after posting a $1,500 bail. He was also detained for stealing on January 12, 2020, and freed the same day.

Stamps have been on parole since May 2018, having served five years of a six-year sentence for attempted stabbing murder and three years for domestic assault. Stamps pled guilty to the crime after first claiming self-defense, according to Assistant State’s Attorney James Murphy, according to CWB Chicago.

As of Wednesday morning, CPD had no more information.
