At least one person dead and over two dozen people hospitalised; due to a listeria epidemic since January according to investigators with the US CDC on Saturday. The outbreak is related to ice cream produced in Sarasota, Florida.

The CDC warned customers to discard any Big Olaf Creamery brand ice cream they may have; which is only in distribution in Florida and is not the subject of an official recall.

The CDC said that Big Olaf Creamery in Sarasota, Florida; was voluntarily contacting retail outlets to advise; against selling its ice cream until further notice.

Additionally, the organisation recommended that customers and business owners clean any surfaces, containers, and serving pieces; that may have come into contact with Big Olaf ice cream items.

Five women became unwell while pregnant; at least one patient experienced a miscarriage while ill; and the mortality associates with the listeria epidemic was recorded in Illinois, said the CDC.

The CDC verified Thursday that New York and Massachusetts each reported two instances; while Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania each confirmed one case. Florida has continued to be the outbreak’s hub; with 12 cases documented to yet, according to WTVJ.

Nearly all 23 sick patients, according to the CDC; either reside in Florida or visited there a month or so before becoming ill.

The organisation also issued a warning that the epidemic may be more prevalent; than what the public health statistics suggest since some patients recover without receiving medical attention; and aren’t checked for the illness.

Young children, the elderly, and other people with compromised immune systems; are particularly vulnerable to the serious and occasionally deadly illnesses; that Listeria monocytogenes may cause, listeriosis.
