British health experts said the monkeypox outbreak in the UK is “showing symptoms of diminishing,” but it’s too early to tell if the reduction will be sustained.

The Health Security Agency said in a statement on Monday that authorities are reporting roughly 29 new monkeypox illnesses every day, compared to about 52 cases a day during the last week of June. In July, officials calculated that the infection was doubling every two weeks. To date, the UK has documented almost 3,000 cases of monkeypox, with London accounting for more than 70% of cases.

The government also stated that over 27,000 people were inoculated against smallpox, a similar disease.

“These thousands of vaccines, administered by the (National Health Service)to those at highest risk of exposure, should have a significant impact on the transmission of the virus,” the agency said.

Britain reduced its assessment of the monkeypox outbreak last month after finding no evidence of ongoing transmission in specific populations; 99% of illnesses in the UK are in men.

British officials stated that they purchased 150,000 doses of vaccine manufactured by Bavarian Nordic, the world’s sole provider. The first 50,000 doses have already been distributed or will be sent soon to clinics across the country, with the following 100,000 doses slated to be provided in September.

Monkeypox is transferred through close direct contact with an infected person’s sores, clothing, or bedsheets. The majority of people heal without therapy, but the lesions can be excruciatingly painful, and more severe cases might result in complications such as brain inflammation and death.

More than 31,000 cases of monkeypox have been reported in nearly 90 countries worldwide. The World Health Organization labelled the outbreak a worldwide emergency last month, while American officials designated the disease a national emergency.

Authorities are scrambling to stop monkeypox before it gets established as a new disease, owing to a limited global supply of vaccines.
