The FBI has accused Donald Trump of snatching his passports during a raid of his Mar-a-Lago resort.

The former US president said three of his passports were “stolen” in a “attack on a political opponent.”

Last week, the FBI raided his home after agents discovered boxes holding confidential information were transported to his estate after his administration ended.

The National Archives and Materials Administration (NARA) retrieved them in January and then asked the Justice Department to investigate whether Mr Trump’s management of White House records violated federal law.

In a post on Truth Social – his own social media platform – Mr Trump told his followers: “Wow. In the raid by the FBI of Mar-a-Lago, they stole my three Passports (one expired), along with everything else.

“This is an assault on a political opponent at a level never seen before in our country. Third world.”

According to a Department of Justice official, Mr Trump’s passports were not in the possession of the FBI and had been returned to him.

Mr Trump’s supporters have mainly been energised by the search, rallying alongside him and denouncing the decision as political because it comes at a time when many expect him to declare intentions to run for re-election.
