Families of Mexico trapped miners unsatisfied by rescue strategy
According to Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Friday, the families of the 10 miners who have been underground in Mexico since early August have rejected a fresh rescue plan put out by the administration.
According to Lopez Obrador, the concept, which involved tunnelling underground, was turned down because of how time-consuming it would be.
On August 3, the El Pinabete mine in Coahuila, Mexico, collapsed. Ten individuals are still trapped in flooded shafts despite rescuers’ best efforts to free five of them.
Since then, there have been no known indications of life or communications with the missing miners.
As decisions were being made more than three weeks after the incident, Obrador stated that he wanted the families of the victims to be part in the rescue plan. “I told the rescuers to tell the family, but they objected. It’s not that they don’t want them to save their family members; they just think it will take a while “On Friday, Lopez Obrador remarked.
Lopez Obrador didn’t rule out the prospect of payment when asked if the government had provided compensation to the families.
“The rescue is currently of utmost importance. There is compensation, of course, but that is not the point “explained he.
Lopez Obrador continued by saying that efforts are being made to save the miners and to provide recompense for their families. “We are trying to determine which option is best. In addition, we are told to persevere “said he.
According to Laura Velazquez, Mexico’s coordinator for civil protection, the water level in the mine’s numerous flooded shafts was considerable, reaching up to 31 meters.
Up until a rupture in a nearby mine caused water to reenter, responders’ attempts to drain the mine had contributed to a general decrease in water levels.
At the time, Lopez Obrador stated, “Unfortunately, we still haven’t been able to rescue the miners…Progress was already being made, but the unfortunate thing was that another hole was created in the next mine, which was already inundated, and the water levels rose again.
