Nearly two months after Boris Johnson resigned in the wake of a slew of scandals, the country of Britain will learn later Monday who will be its next prime minister as the nation grapples with an impending economic and humanitarian crisis.

A little after 12:30 p.m. The results of the leadership contest between the ruling Conservative Party’s final two candidates, former finance minister Rishi Sunak and foreign secretary Liz Truss, will be made public at local time.

Truss, a proponent of low taxes and the face of the British Conservative right, is the overwhelming favorite to defeat Sunak, the former chancellor of the exchequer, who supported Brexit but now favors a more conciliatory approach to the EU.

The winner will serve as prime minister until the following general election, which must be conducted by December 2024, as the leader of the majority party in the House of Commons.

Whoever wins will probably go to meet Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday to get an invitation to form a government. Usually, the reception is held at Buckingham Palace, but since the 96-year-old monarch is in Scotland in Balmoral, she will host Johnson and his successor there for the first time in her reign.

However, the next prime minister’s celebrations are likely to be short-lived due to the nation’s soaring cost of living crisis.

The average annual energy bill alone is expected to increase by 80% to £3,549 (about $4,180) from October and threaten to bankrupt most of the nation.

Truss refused to address how she would deal with growing expenses on a BBC political program on Sunday, but she said, “What I want to reassure people about is, I would act if elected as prime minister within one week.

In the contest for leadership of the Conservative Party, Truss is unquestionably the favorite to receive the most votes from regular party members. Despite having voted to stay in the EU in 2016, Truss has discovered that she is the candidate that the vast majority of Brexiteers in her party choose.

She has been accused by detractors of engaging in sleazy vote-buying tactics by taking a tough stance on Brexit.

They emphasized how Truss’s ideas had changed over the course of her adult life from being an anti-monarchist who supported drug legalization in her adolescence to being the face of the Conservative Party’s right wing.

With her harsh stance against the EU on Brexit and her emphasis on tax cuts as the primary remedy for the cost-of-living crisis, Truss’ campaign platform has provided enough of red meat for the Conservative membership.

Contrary to Truss, Sunak did vote to leave the EU in 2016 and has made numerous commitments to do away with EU rules. Although he has somewhat followed her lead, he spent the early part of his campaign attacking Truss’s promises for tax cuts.

Early on in the coronavirus pandemic, Sunak received praise for using public funds to help those who lost their employment or were unable to operate their enterprises.

Later, he was fined for going to a party with Johnson when the city was under lockdown, and his wife Akshata Murty, the daughter of an Indian millionaire, was the subject of an investigation into her tax affairs.
