Labour orders MP Nadia Whittome to remove Rishi Sunak tweet
A tweet from MP Nadia Whittome claiming that Rishi Sunak being prime minister “isn’t a gain for Asian representation” has been asked to be removed by Labour.
After Mr. Sunak’s confirmation as the first British Asian prime minister of the UK by Conservative MPs this week, the Nottingham East MP resigned.
After receiving harsh criticism, her tweet was later removed.
Sir Keir Starmer’s spokeswoman for Labour has since stated she was told to take it down.
She tweeted that Mr. Sunak was a multimillionaire who had reduced bank taxes as living standards in the UK fell, adding, “Black, white, or Asian: if you work for a living, he is not on your side.”
Rishi Sunak being the first British Asian prime minister was a “wonderful thing,” according to Sir Keir’s spokesman, and something of which the nation “should be proud.”
Ms. Whittome would not apologies for the tweet, according to a representative for her, and the party had not requested that she do so.
Labour has stated that it does not anticipate her to apologies, and it is known that the party currently views the situation as resolved.
Like Rishi Sunak, Ms. Whittome is a second-generation British Indian, according to a statement from her office.
“Ms. Whittome was pointing to Rishi Sunak’s record as chancellor to demonstrate that effective political representation of British Asian communities – and the interests of all working people – is about far more than the ethnicity of the prime minister.
