Russia warns British ambassador over “dangerous” Crimea drone strike
In response to its claim that British experts were involved in a Ukrainian drone strike on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet in Crimea, the British ambassador was summoned, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry, which said on Thursday that it had issued a complaint to her.
“The démarche stressed that such confrontational actions by the British threatened to escalate the situation and could lead to unpredictable and dangerous consequences,” the ministry said in a statement.
Soon after 10.30am, Ambassador Deborah Bronnert arrived at the foreign ministry while a small group of protesters brandished signs that said, “Britain is a terrorist state” and yelled anti-British chants. After about thirty minutes, she left. British officials made no quick comments.
Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, had previously stated that the ambassador will be called to discuss Saturday’s drone attack on Crimea, which Russia forcefully invaded from Ukraine in 2014.
The statement noted that Britain had been training Ukrainian service personnel for some time. It said this had included the training of divers in “deep-sea sabotage skills”.
“There is information that the British Navy also transferred a certain number of uncrewed underwater vehicles to the Ukrainian side,” it added.
Following the drone assault, Russia briefly halted its involvement in a Black Sea Grain agreement that was mediated by the UN.
