Former PM Boris Johnson announces his election plans
Boris Johnson has informed his local Conservative Party that he plans to run for re-election as an MP at the following general election.
The next election must take place by early 2025, and the Conservatives have given their MPs until December 5 to announce their intentions.
11 Conservative MPs have so far said they will not run for reelection.
There were rumors that Mr. Johnson might leave the legislature after being dismissed as prime minister.
MPs are still permitted to resign before to the subsequent election without first informing the party.
After receiving more than 100 nominations from his parliamentary peers to succeed Liz Truss as prime minister in October, Mr. Johnson withdrew from the race only hours before the deadline.
Since 2015, Mr. Johnson has served as the west London district’s MP for Uxbridge and Ruislip. He was still the mayor of London when he was chosen for the position.
He will be running to represent the constituency for the fourth time in the upcoming election.
After achieving a 1.8% swing in favor of the Conservatives during the 2019 election, Mr. Johnson has a majority of 7,210 votes.
The Boundary Commission’s final determination regarding the creation of constituency boundaries for the subsequent election will be made public on December 5. Before then, Conservative MPs are requested to declare whether they intend to run for re-election by Conservative Campaign Headquarters (CCHQ).
If the boundaries of Mr. Johnson’s seat are changed to include some new Tory-leaning areas, he might gain support.
Levelling Dehenna Davison, a minister, Chloe Smith, a former work and pensions secretary, and Will Wragg, the chair of the select committee on public administration, have all declared their intention to resign.
