Eight members of a criminal group who escaped from prison through a ground hole are being sought by police in Paraguay.

The escapees are members of First Command of the Capital (PCC), the greatest criminal organization in Brazil that has been moving into the neighboring Paraguay.

It’s unclear if prison inmates or construction employees excavated the pit.

So yet, only one fugitive has been apprehended.

The jail break took place early on Tuesday morning in Coronel Oviedo, according to the Paraguayan news channel.

According to Media, the hole in the ground was left after construction was finished, and police were not made aware of the “improvement activities.”

However, La Tribuna, a different Paraguayan newspaper, said that the prisoners themselves had dug the pit and the tunnel that led from it.

A journalist, posted pictures of a pair of abandoned flip-flops next to the hole on social media.

The tunnel that emerged at the exercise yard was reached through a hole that ran from the prison’s bathroom. From there, all the convicts had to do to escape was leap a fence.

According to the justice minister of Paraguay, “a tunnel like this isn’t formed overnight” and “obviously there was incompetence on the part of the jail authorities.”

According to police, all of the escapees are regarded as being very dangerous. They are currently incarcerated for serious offences like murder and kidnapping. According to officials, the youngest escapee is 19 and the oldest is 40.

The formidable gang known as the PCC is based in the Brazilian metropolis of So Paulo. They are in charge of prisons in Paraguay and Brazil.

Meanwhile, gang members operating outside commit massive bank robberies and narcotics trafficking to destinations as far distant as Europe.

This is not the first recent large-scale PCC jailbreak in Paraguay.

75 prisoners broke out of a jail in the eastern city of Pedro Juan Caballero in 2020.
