India’s annual rotating presidency of the Group of Twenty (G20) began on Thursday.
The theme of India’s presidency is ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’, inspired by the Sanskrit phrase ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’.
Mr. Modi has called for member countries to make India’s G20 presidency one of “healing, harmony and hope”.

As the G20’s leader, India will endeavor to advance a “global sense of oneness,” according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Group of Twenty’s annual rotating presidency, which this year was officially assumed by India, began on Thursday.

It was officially given to Mr. Modi at the conclusion of the G20 summit in November by Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

Mr. Modi had said then that it was a “matter of pride” for Indians.

The G20 agenda for India would be “comprehensive, ambitious, action-oriented, and decisive,” Mr. Modi wrote in an editorial that was carried in many major Indian newspapers on Thursday.

A group of nations known as the G20 gathers to discuss strategies for the world economy. The 20 nations collectively make for two-thirds of the world’s population, 85% of its economic production, and 75% of its commerce.

Every year, a new G20 member state assumes the presidency and controls the meeting schedule.

India’s main areas of concentration during its one-year term are anticipated to be digital concerns and multilateral financial institution reform.

India has pledged to fight to bridge the digital divide during the summit in November, particularly in developing nations.

“India’s experience of the past few years has shown us that if we make digital architecture inclusive, it can bring about socio-economic transformation,” Mr Modi said at the Bali summit.

In the editorial published on Thursday, Mr Modi wrote, “We have leveraged technology to create digital public goods that are open, inclusive and inter-operable.”

He added that India’s G20 priorities will be shaped in consultation with “our fellow-travelers in the global South, whose voice often goes unheard”.

The G20 troika, which is made up of the past, present, and incoming presidencies, is now composed for the first time ever of developing nations: Indonesia, India, and Brazil.

In September 2023, India will host the following G20 summit in New Delhi.
