After pipes burst, flooding the dining area and dripping from the ceiling, a pub must conduct a massive clean-up operation in Mountain Ash bar.

The George in Mountain Ash manager Richard McGill awoke on Saturday to the sound of gushing water.

“It’s a total mess,” he said. “My partner could hear running water and thought it must be the dishwasher or something.”

Mr. McGill said: “The suspended roof has gone, the air conditioning, the furniture, the carpets, the walls, skirting boards.

“Everything has been annihilated by water.”

He claimed to have summoned a plumber, who discovered three bursts in a hot water pipe and one in a cold water line that ran above the suspended ceiling.

By using other rooms for Sunday lunches, Mr. McGill claimed to have kept the pub open, but he expressed concern that the restaurant might remain closed for some time.

“It’s going to be a month or two before we can get the room back,” he said.

Mr. McGill said he hoped to be able to continue operating over the busy holiday season while repairs were being made. He and his partner purchased the pub in Rhondda Cynon Taf four months ago.

“We had great support from people,” he added.

Welsh Water said it was aware of burst pipes across its network due to a “rapid thaw” following prolonged freezing temperatures.

It said the thaw had led to ground movement which had caused a large number of leaks “across our network and on our customers’ properties”.

“But, so far, the majority of calls has been from customers with frozen supply pipes,” it added.
