Tate, a 36-year-old British-American citizen with 4.5 million Twitter followers, was first taken into custody on December 29.
An official said late Tuesday that a court in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, had upheld the 30-day detention of Andrew Tate, a polarising social media celebrity and self-described misogynist, on allegations of organised crime, human trafficking, and rape.
According to Ramona Bolla of the Romanian anti-organized crime organisation DIICOT, Tate’s appeal against a judge’s earlier decision to prolong his detention from 24 hours to 30 days was denied by the court.
Tate, a 36-year-old dual citizen of the United Kingdom and the United States with 4.5 million Twitter followers, was initially jailed on December 29 for 24 hours alongside his brother Tristan, who was charged in the same case.
All four appeals against a judge’s Dec. 30 decision to allow prosecutors’ request to extend the arrest period were dismissed by the court late Tuesday. The judge’s reasoning was explained in a document that also stated that they might “leave Romania and settle in countries that do not allow extradition” and that “the risk of them avoiding investigations cannot be overlooked.”
Tate, a former professional kickboxer, is said to have moved to Romania in 2017. Tate was previously barred from using a number of well-known social media sites for expressing hate speech and misogynistic beliefs. He insulted teenage climate campaigner Greta Thunberg on Twitter the week before his arrest.
Six victims in the trafficking case have been identified by DIICOT as having been sexually exploited and the targets of “acts of physical violence and mental coercion” by the suspected criminal organisation.
According to the agency, victims were compelled into engaging in pornographic actions in order to generate income for the alleged perpetrators after being seduced under the guise of love. Victims were also allegedly threatened, kept under surveillance, and subjected to other forms of control.
According to DIICOT spokesperson Bolla, prosecutors looking into the case have seized 15 high-end vehicles, at least seven of which belonged to the Tate brothers, and more than ten homes or pieces of property held by businesses linked to them.
According to Bolla, the assets “will be taken by the state and (will) cover the expenditures of the inquiry and damages to the victims” if prosecutors can show that the Tates made money through human trafficking.
Prosecutors are now permitted to ask for detentions of up to 180 days for the four accused individuals after the appeals court upheld the extension of the arrest warrant.
Tate’s Twitter account has been filled with a slew of cryptic remarks ever since his arrest. Every tweet receives extensive media coverage.
One was published on Sunday and was followed with a Romanian report that said either he or his brother had needed medical attention since being detained. It read: “The Matrix has assaulted me. However, they are mistaken; an idea cannot be killed. difficult to kill.
“Going to jail while guilty of a crime is the life tale of a criminal,” read another post from Saturday. being imprisoned despite being 100 percent innocent is the narrative of a hero.
A U.K. advocacy organisation called Hope not Hate claimed to have kept tabs on Tate for years “because to his intimate ties to the far right.” It labelled the influencer as a “severe sexist” with conspiratorial views in a report it published last year.
Hope not Hate issued a statement after Tate was suspended by Facebook parent company Meta in August. “Our main concern is that his brand of extreme and occasionally violent misogyny is reaching a young male audience and that he could serve as a gateway to wider far-right politics,” the statement read.
