British volunteer died during rescue mission in Ukraine
People gathered in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, to pay tribute to a British volunteer who died while helping to save people in the eastern town of Soledar.
Where Ukrainian and Russian forces are engaged in a fierce battle for control.
One of the two British volunteers who died while trying to evacuate charity workers, Andrew Bagshaw, was honored at the service on Sunday.
During the fierce struggle, his 28-year-old coworker Chris Parry was also slain.
Several dozen people showed up to pay their respects to Bagshaw, who was in his late 40s, including friends and other volunteers. The ceremony, conducted by an Orthodox priest, was held in a modest church connected to Kyiv’s historic St. Sophia Cathedral and was well attended.
“I remember one of the first times when we went [on an evacuation run] together. He was a very quiet person; he just wanted to help people,” said volunteer Ignatius Ivlev-Yorke, who organized Bagshaw’s memorial service.
“He felt that this was his mission. That he had a duty to do it.”
According to Bagshaw’s family, the volunteers were killed after their cars were struck by a shell as they attempted to rescue an elderly woman from the town, as reported by Media
Bagshaw and Perry departed Kramatorsk on January 6 for Soledar, according to Ukrainian authorities, who reported losing contact with them on January 9.
In a statement sent through the British Foreign Office, Parry’s family confirmed that both men had died on Tuesday. The statement, however, made no mention of the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
According to Parry’s family, he “found himself drawn to Ukraine in March in its darkest hour at the start of the Russian invasion and helped those most in need, saving over 400 lives plus many abandoned animals”.
The foreign office of the UK claimed to be helping the families. When Bagshaw visited Ukraine in April, he was also a dual citizen of New Zealand, where he resided.
