After escaping from her Dallas Zoo enclosure hours earlier, a missing clouded leopard was discovered safe and sound on Friday afternoon, according to zoo authorities.

The zoo stated that the clouded leopard, named Nova, was “quite close to her natural home” and that “teams were able to safely catch her just before 5:15 p.m.”

As soon as it was discovered that the fence in Nova’s enclosure had been deliberately cut, Dallas police opened a criminal inquiry, according to both the police and the zoo.

Police reported that a cutting device was used on Saturday to make an entrance in the leopard habitat’s fencing. According to authorities, a similar cut was also discovered at the habitat for a species of monkey known as a langur.

According to authorities, all of the langurs were there and “did not appear to be hurt or in any danger.” They claimed that it was unclear whether the two instances were connected.

The clouded leopard’s escape, which the zoo referred to as “a major occurrence,” forced it to close for the day on Friday. The animal was not harmful, according to authorities.

The zoo tweeted on Friday morning, “We have an ongoing dilemma at the zoo right now with a Code Blue – that is a non-dangerous animal that is out of its home.
Nova most likely got out of the enclosure she shares with her sibling, Luna, through what zoo authorities initially thought was a tear in the mesh.

Nova most likely got out of the enclosure she shares with her sibling, Luna, through what zoo authorities initially thought was a tear in the mesh.

Because Nova and Luna are close and Luna is still in the habitat, zoo authorities didn’t anticipate Nova to leave the habitat. They were right: She was discovered on zoo grounds.

Harrison Edell, senior vice president of animal care and conservation at the Dallas Zoo, speculated that Nova likely concealed in a treetop after making her getaway.

Because they weren’t sure of the cat’s size, the police initially deployed a SWAT team to the zoo, Mitchell said.

The zoo reported that on Saturday, a “overly noisy” squirrel led employees to a location where they might look for Nova, who was at that point beginning to emerge from her hide.

About 30 minutes later, according to the zoo, she was restrained and brought back to her habitat.

According to the zoo, Nova was examined by veterinarian and animal care teams before being put back in her enclosure, where she spent Saturday perched on a high branch.
