Police in Tennessee shot and killed a Grammy-winning sound engineer who was suspected of kidnapping and holding his wife and stepdaughter at gunpoint.

Mark Capps, 54, was fatally shot by a Metro Nashville Police officer following a confrontation at the man’s Hermitage area house on Thursday, according to agency spokesman Don Aaron. According to Aaron, officers had gone to the house to arrest Capps on warrants alleging two charges of both aggravated assault and aggravated kidnapping.

He allegedly held his 60-year-old wife and 23-year-old stepdaughter at gunpoint at the house early on Thursday, according to police.

The victims claimed that Capps woke them up about three in the morning, forced them into the living room, and would not let them go, according to Aaron. He allegedly continuously threatened to murder them if they tried to phone anybody, but they were able to flee when he went to sleep, according to the police report. When they went to the police, Aaron claimed that afternoon arrest warrants were issued.

Capps opened the front door while carrying a pistol when three SWAT police arrived to arrest him, according to Aaron, and Officer Kendall Coon yelled at him to show his hands.

Aaron stated that Officer Coon “considered Capps’ moves to be an immediate, imminent threat and fired.” Capps expired there and then.

The home’s door appears to open in the shooting video, and an officer can be heard saying “Show me your hands” before opening fire a few seconds later.

The shooting will be looked into by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. The actions taken will be subject to an administrative review by the Nashville Police Department to see if they adhere to departmental standards.

According to Capps’ website, he is an engineer, mixer, and producer with multiple Grammy awards. His work on polka recordings earned him four Grammy awards, and his website mentions a number of additional albums for which he provided mixing and engineering services.
