A tunnel exit near the southern Tibetan city of Nyingchi was hit by an avalanche on Tuesday night, killing at least eight people.
A local who assisted in the rescue effort informed local media that the avalanche caused many automobiles to flip over and buried the road in snow.
How many persons are missing is not known. Thirty big machinery and hundreds of rescuers are combing the area.
