A tunnel exit near the southern Tibetan city of Nyingchi was hit by an avalanche on Tuesday night, killing at least eight people.

A local who assisted in the rescue effort informed local media that the avalanche caused many automobiles to flip over and buried the road in snow.

How many persons are missing is not known. Thirty big machinery and hundreds of rescuers are combing the area.

The hilly area frequently experiences avalanches.

A highway connecting the distant and predominately Buddhist region of Tibet with the town of Pai in Mainling county saw an avalanche.

One woman reported that her spouse had vanished following the accident to the local media site Hongxin News. He was on his way to the airport to catch a flight home so that they could all enjoy the Lunar New Year together.

Nyingchi, which is located at an average elevation of 3,100 metres above sea level, is a well-liked vacation destination.
