According to Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno on Wednesday, Japan protested the decision by China to suspend visas for people of that country and requested that China reverse its decision.

“It is regrettable that China unilaterally has taken visa suspension action for reasons other than steps for the coronavirus,” Matsuno told a regular press conference.

China’s action followed Japan’s toughening of Covid-19 border control regulations for travellers arriving directly from China, including the requirement for a negative PCR test result fewer than 72 hours prior to departure.

When asked about the future of Japan’s border controls, Matsuno responded that the government will act appropriately in light of China’s coronavirus crisis and its information sharing.
