In the first federal death penalty trial of US President Joe Biden’s administration, a US jury on Thursday found Sayfullo Saipov guilty of murder and terrorism for using a truck to kill eight people on a Manhattan bike path in 2017.

The jury will reconvene later to decide if the death penalty is the proper punishment after finding Saipov guilty of murder with the intention of joining the militant organization Islamic State, better known as ISIS.

The sole issue that divided federal prosecutors in Manhattan and Saipov’s defense was whether he committed the crime so he could join ISIS, which the US considers to be a terrorist group. Saipov has entered a not-guilty plea.

He was found guilty of all 28 charges he was up against, including attempted murder and murder, both to gain access to ISIS, as well as to provide material support to a terrorist group and damage or destruction to a vehicle.
