Teen charged in machete attack on three police in New York City
The New York Police Department announced on Monday that a 19-year-old man who attacked police officers with a machete on New Year’s Eve in Manhattan was charged with assault and attempted murder.
Trevor Bickford was charged with assaulting three officers just outside the Times Square security zone, where tens of thousands of New Yorkers gathered on New Year’s Eve, according to the police.
The offender struck two cops on the head without causing life-threatening injuries before another officer shot him in the shoulder with his service weapon.
Bickford is from Wells, Maine, a small seaside community, according to the New York Police Department, which could not provide any information.
According to US media, Bickford demonstrated recent signs of Islamist radicalization and may have attempted a suicide attack.
An international news agency, citing anonymous sources, reported that he was carrying a diary in which he professed his intention to join the Afghan Taliban and die as a martyr.
The media said that the FBI questioned him in mid-December after a relative alerted the agency to his jihadist remarks.
New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell stated at a press conference on Sunday that a counterintelligence unit from the FBI is involved in the probe.
