Tragedy in Nepal: Plane Crash at Pokhara Airport Leaves 16 Dead
Officials in central Nepal report that a plane carrying 72 people crashed at Pokhara airport and that 16 remains have been found.
The Yeti Airlines ATR 72 aircraft, which was travelling from Kathmandu to Pokhara, crashed and caught fire as it touched down.
According to Reuters, there were 68 passengers, including 10 foreigners, and four crew members on board.
At the crash scene, which is close to the airport for the tourist town, Nepalese military are helping with the rescue.
Social media users shared a video of the crash site that featured flaming wreckage and dense, billowing black smoke.
The jet “has split into pieces,” an army spokesman told Reuters, adding that “we anticipate to recover additional bodies.”
Pushpa Kamal Dahal, the prime minister, convened an urgent meeting of his cabinet and encouraged state agencies to work on rescue operations.
