Ukraine’s first lady Olena addressed the World Economic Forum to build support
In a special speech delivered on Tuesday at the World Economic Forum’s 2023 Annual Meeting, Olena Zelenska, the First Lady of Ukraine, urged world leaders and business executives to use their influence in support of Ukraine.
Zelenska remarked at the summit in Davos, Switzerland, “I am meeting at the Davos forum because deep down we feel there is no global crisis that humanity and mankind would not be able to fix.”
Nearly a year has passed since Russia invaded Ukraine when Zelenska made her address. Tens of thousands of military personnel and civilians have died thus far in the conflict, which has also caused roughly 8 million Ukrainian refugees to migrate across Europe.
“We are facing a threat of the collapse of a world as we know it, the way that we are accustomed to it and to what we aspire”.
Zelenska urged people around the world to first acknowledge the continued human suffering in Ukraine.
“I want to emphasize that these points are not purely political,” she stated. “Each one has a tangible human dimension. This is the dimension of those crying in an ICU where doctors are trying to fight for the life of the wounded child. A boy whose family was shot by the occupiers as they were trying to evacuate. This is the dimension of farmers who are afraid to go back to their fields because mines are scattered all over the field by the occupiers.”
“I am constantly trying to convey that in Ukraine there is no place that is completely safe,” Zelenska added. “You cannot take a day off from war. Everyone now in Ukraine has to risk their lives every day. There is nothing off limits for Russia.”
Brge Brende, the president of the World Economic Forum, welcomed Zelenska and commended her for working “tirelessly to remedy the human impact of the war.”
Over 2,700 executives and professionals from 126 countries are attending the Forum’s Annual Meeting. This comprises more than 50 heads of state and more than 300 sessions devoted to discussing the many problems the globe is currently experiencing.
Zelenska asked participants to understand how the conflict in Ukraine is linked to a number of other global challenges, such as the climate crisis and the volatility of the world’s food and energy supplies. She questioned, “How would they reach climate neutrality if they haven’t even stopped burning whole cities in Ukraine?”
Furthermore, Zelenska reminded world leaders of the importance of forging a single front against Russian aggression, saying that “unity brings peace back.”
“If people come together,” she said. “We believe the world will unite in peace.”
