Nigeria’s electoral commission has begun announcing state-by-state results from Saturday’s presidential election.
All three major parties have expressed concerns about irregularities. Although not on the scale of previous elections, there have been reports of violence and intimidation.
Here are the election results and current leaders.
There are eighteen candidates running for president, but only three are considered to have a realistic chance. Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar of the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and Peter Obi of the smaller Labour Party are the candidates (LP).
Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), a fourth candidate, is expected to do well in the north.
According to a reports tally of provisional results announced by electoral officials in 31 of Nigeria’s 36 states and the federal capital Abuja, Tinubu was in the lead with approximately 35% or 7.5 million valid votes counted, while Atiku trailed with 29% or nearly 6.2 million valid votes.
