A Russian woman poisoned her US doppelganger with cheesecake
A US court on Thursday found a Russian-born woman guilty of trying to poison her American counterpart with cheesecake before assuming her identity.
A jury in New York determined that 47-year-old Viktoria Nasyrova was guilty of attempted murder, according to a statement from the district attorney for the Queens neighborhood of the city.
In August 2016, Nasyrova paid a visit to the residence of her 35-year-old victim with a cheesecake as a gift.
The trial heard that at the time, the two appeared similar to one another; both spoke Russian and had dark hair, the same skin tone, and other physical characteristics.
After eating the dessert, the woman felt nauseous and eventually passed out.
The victim was found unconscious the following day by a friend. Prosecutors claimed that pills were left all around her to give the impression that she had attempted suicide.
After receiving medical attention in the hospital, the victim found her passport and work authorization card gone, along with jewelry and other valuables, when she got home.
According to the district attorney’s office, when law enforcement officials examined the cheesecake, they discovered that it had been spiked with Phenazepam, a very strong sedative.
Nasyrova, a Brooklyn resident, was also found guilty of assault, wrongful detention, and theft.
She will be given a sentence on March 21 and might spend up to 25 years behind bars.
